📘 A1 | Grammar point

“Al” means “a + el”

In Spanish, we do not say a el supermercado. The two words contract: a + el = al. That is why we say “Luis va al supermercado”. With a feminine noun, there is no contraction: “va a la tienda”.

a + el = al · a + la = a la
Luis va al supermercado.
The preposition a and the masculine article el become al.

📘 A2 | Grammar point

Past habit or one completed action?

To talk about a repeated habit or background situation in the past, Spanish normally uses the imperfect: “Luis iba cada semana” and “compraba fruta”. For a completed action on one specific occasion, it uses the preterite: “Aquel día eligió manzanas y pagó con tarjeta”.

iba / compraba = repeated past habit · eligió / pagó = completed event
Luis iba al supermercado cada semana, pero aquel día pagó con tarjeta.
The imperfect gives the habit; the preterite gives the completed event.

📘 B1 | Grammar point

“Ser” or “estar”?

Use ser for a characteristic or description: “El supermercado es grande”. Use estar for a state or situation that can change: “Ahora el supermercado está menos concurrido”. A useful shortcut is: ser describes what something is like; estar describes its state at a particular moment.

ser → characteristic / description · estar → state / situation
El supermercado es grande, pero ahora está menos concurrido.
Es describes it; está gives its current state.
