My shift as a cashier begins with checking the barcode scanner, card reader, receipt printer, and cash drawer. I also make sure the conveyor belt and scale are working properly. During the morning, I assist customers with just a few items as well as others with shopping carts filled to the brim. Some are in a hurry; others need help finding a produce code or using a coupon. I keep the line moving without making anyone feel rushed. A friendly greeting can go a long way.

B2 | UPPER-INTERMEDIATE
B2 | UPPER-INTERMEDIATE
Working as a cashier requires concentration, accuracy, and tact. I scan items at a steady pace, check price overrides, enter PLU codes, remove security tags, and process coupons. During rush hour, the line builds up, and I have to keep track of several details at once. Even so, I keep a cool head and do not lose my train of thought. If an item rings up at the wrong price or a payment is declined, I press the assistance button and resolve the problem without letting frustration get the better of me.

C1 | ADVANCED

Over time, as a cashier, I have learned that a supermarket checkout is where speed, accuracy, and human interaction meet. In just a few minutes, I process payments, coupons, price checks, and unexpected issues. Some customers arrive tired or impatient, so I take my cue from their tone and body language before responding. I have to strike the right balance between keeping the line moving and giving each person the attention they need. In this job, efficiency counts for little if it comes at the expense of courtesy.

My work as a cashier has taught me to observe everyday life at close range. Across my conveyor belt pass weekly groceries, last-minute items, hurried silences, brief conversations, and small gestures of courtesy.
